For the inexperienced trekkers who seek a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, Ghorepani PoonHill Trek—Sunrise Destination of Nepal is an adventure in the Annapurna Region that presents you with serene landscapes along with a panoramic view of the white-washed mountains of Nepal. It is one of the most famous short treks in Nepal.

Trekking up Ghorepani Poonhill is a wonderful experience that allows you to witness the natural splendor of this area.  You will be able to explore some of the hidden landscapes of Nepal, including mountains like Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Macchapuchare, Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Tharpachuli, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus, Manaslu Range, and Lamjung Himal. You can independently embark on this trek without any guide, which makes it more affordable and leisurely. The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek starts from Nayapul, Pokhara, which is about an hour's drive from the main city of Pokhara. Treading around the beautiful Phewa Lake and exploring ‘the city of lakes’ Pokhara shall turn into a nirvana for nature lovers. As you reach the Poonhill before dawn, you will witness the mesmerizing transformation of the Himalayas as the sun paints the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple.

The charming villages like Ulleri, Gorepani, and Ghandruk will present you with the local and vibrant culture of the Annapurna Himalayan region. The warm and hospitable locals of this region will immerse you in Nepalese culture. You can further transverse the diverse flora and fauna, lush green forests, terraced fields, and verdant meadows.

Trip Itinerary

Day 01

On this day, you will collect yourself after a fulfilling breakfast and prepare to head towards Pokhara. You can get to Pokhara Vai Air on a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu. Alternatively, you can get on a travel bus or any private vehicle to Pokhara from Kathmandu. It is 205 kilometers away from Kathmandu.

Day 02

Your trip to Poon Hill begins at Birethanti. The travel to Birethanti from Pokhara takes roughly 1.5 hours. As you trek through Modi Khola, you will explore numerous local villages, teahouses, beautiful green rolling hills, and rivers. As you pass through the village of Hile, you will arrive in Tikhedhunga. After passing through the suspension bridge, you will get to the Magar village of Ulleri. This village will provide you with the sights of Hiuchuli and Mount Annapurna.

Day 03

Gorepani resides at an altitude of 2860 meters. This is a village which will present you with some of the wonderful panoramas of mountains along with slight of mighty Himalayas. This 5 to 6 hours of trek will lead you to Ghorepani village through Phalate. You will be able to explore the lifestyle of people in this region. You will be spending your day at Gorepani.

Day 04

A short trek from Gorepani will lead you to Poonhill. An early morning hike is recommended to enjoy the magnificent panorama of the rising sun and the majestic mountains. Poon Hill is the greatest vantage point of the trek and is the aspiration and desire of every photographer and sunrise lover. 

At the height of 3210 meters, you can soar around for an hour and return to Gorepani. After that, you will be heading towards Tadapani. The Gorepani and Annapurna Circuit Trek is connected by a lovely woodland truck and leads to Deurali. As you ascend through the cane fields of Bhurungadi Khola, you will step into Tadapani after a trek of 5 to 6 hours.

Day 05

After you spend your memorable day at Jhinu Dada and glancing at Dhaulagiri, you will set out to trek to Gandruk through Bhaise Khola. As you step into Gandruk, you will see Annapurna, GangaPurna, and Macchapuchare. 

The Gurung settlement of Gandruk is known as Nepal’s second-largest settlement area for Gurungs. As you reach Nayapul, you will be boarding a tourist deluxe bus and travel to Pokhara. While in Nayapul, you can explore the culture and admire nature.

Day 06

Once you reach Pokhara, you can explore numerous lakes and other beautiful destinations on the following day. Explore the city of lakes and enjoy the beautiful lakes and mountain panorama from Lakeside Pokhara.

Day 07

Drive back to Kathmandu through the enthralling Marsyanghadi River and the Trishuli River along the way. Various attractive villages such as Damauli Bazar, Dumre, and Muglin are on the road while you drive back to Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Valley will be waiting for you. You will arrive at the hotel and be welcomed by the crew.

Frequently asked questions

The best time for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is during Spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). You can also trek during winter. However, the weather can be cold and there are chances for snowfall.

The overall cost depends upon your itinerary and the type of service you choose. However, on average you can pay between 500 USD to 1000 USD.

 

A guide or porter is not compulsory for the trek. However, it can be helpful if you are not familiar with the area and have a lot of luggage.

 

Accommodation ranges from basic teahouses to comfortable lodges. You can choose as per your preferences.

 

It is a moderately challenging trek. However, if you are an experienced hiker with a good physical condition, it will rather be easy for you.
