Journey into the historic and far off Mustang Region in Northern Nepal. This is the “Forbidden Kingdom” and focal point of the unique and culturally rich Tiji Festival. Previously Mustang was locked away from the outside world. However, in 1992 the area was opened up for trekking and since then has attracted a growing number of outside visitors.
Most trekking agencies in Nepal offer expeditions to the Mustang Region but have tended to ignore the Tiji Festival. Pure Adventure Nepal offers a trip to the Region that includes the Lo Manthang Tiji Festival. The festival involves three days of religious and spiritual ritual and ceremony aimed at chasing away the demons from the area.
Lo Manthang is an ancient “city” immersed in Tibetan Buddhist beliefs and traditions, surrounded by the great sculptured peaks of Tukuche , Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri with Annapurna in the near distance. The religious ceremonies and rituals are colorful and precise and retell the myth of the casting out of wicked demons from the people and the “city”. There is no doubt that the Tiji Festival invites happiness and delights in witnessing the expulsion of these powerful, evil spirits.

Tiji Festival 2016
I have previously trekked in Nepal with Intrepid but to visit the Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang it was necessary to book directly with a Nepalese Company and from recommendation I chose Pure Adventure Nepal. From the first meeting with company owner, his Trekking Group Leader Dakman and porter Nosen in Kathmandu and throughout the trek and associated transport arrangements the entire trip was professionally run with accommodation and food of a high standard. With just two trekkers on the trip it was a different experience to before - visiting more 'local' restaurants in Kathmandu and places of entertainment than would have been possible with a larger group, but for me this was a benefit. Another advantage of the small group size was walking at ones own pace without feeling any pressure to keep up with the main group. I would have no hesitation in travelling with Pure Adventure Nepal again.
